✘ Myth: People believe that if you stir drano into your urine, you will notice a color change. If it turns green, you will have a boy! However, there are no real colors that are mentioned anywhere that can determine the sex of the child.
✔ Fact : The test only suggests a urine color change if you are about to have a boy but no color change is specified in case you have a girl! Moreover, there is no acidic or alkaline level change in the male and female chromosomes. So, the color change is merely due to the components present in urine. ✘ Myth: Some believe that if your face is round, rosy, and a lot fuller than before, you will have a baby girl.

✔ Fact : The shape of the face can surely not determine the sex of the baby. The rosiness may be just because your inner happiness reflects on your face. And if you have gained immense weight, your face is bound to look fuller.

If you thought obesity and its effects were a private concern, think again. Research has indicated that obesity can affect one’s professional life too. So, how does obesity affect employees and overall employment? Know how, in this write-up…

Transportation is one of the top careers with the heaviest employees. According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey, bus drivers have an obesity rate of 36 percent, which is the highest among 14 other occupation groups surveyed.
Ever heard of an employer saying, “You have an interesting CV, but you are 50 pounds too heavy to apply for this position”, or “Your appraisal is frozen until you shed that flab off your waist”. It is strange that two diverse issues like body image and profession would be talked upon an even platform. We all know that a pleasant personality is always liked by one and all, but how much should your body image affect your employment? Legally, discriminating between employees or candidates on the basis of body image is wrong. But in recent times, many factors are changing the perspective of employers.

Does being obese affect work productivity? Is obesity an obstacle in achieving your professional dreams? According to studies and research, yes. Obesity is on the rise, and can cause losses to both the employer and the employee. This Buzzle write-up gives you a fresh view of how obesity can affect, not only hiring trends, but also your professional growth and success.

Effects of Obesity On Employment

✒ According to a poll conducted by Harris Interactive/HealthDay, it was found that more than 52 percent people in the obese or morbidly obese category said that they felt discriminated when it came to applying for a job or being considered for a promotion.

✒ When views of HR professionals were noted, on whether being obese affected an employee’s career, most opinions showed discrimination. More than 90 percent hiring crew would choose a healthier candidate as compared to obese applicants, even if both had the same experience and qualification. Obese employees were also more easily overlooked when it came to promotions.

✒ While employees have their share of losses, let us also take a look at how obesity can affect employers. Well, employers have to shell an extra buck for obese employees as far as health care and compensation costs are concerned. Medical and disability claims also increase the employer’s financial burden. It was observed that, the cost companies bear for health care was 21 percent higher for obese people, than the cost for employees with a healthy weight.

✒ It is also observed that obese workers have a higher absenteeism rate, as compared to their healthy counterparts. This directly affects productivity and work, which adds up to the losses for the employer or business.

High BPA Levels and Child Obesity

High BPA levels might be one of the possible factors influencing the alarming rise in the number of child obesity cases. The following Buzzle article traces the link between soaring BPA levels and obesity in children.

Over 90% of the population of the United States has noticeable urinary BPA levels.
Bisphenol A, better known as BPA, is an industrial chemical that has long been used in the manufacturing of plastic bottles and food containers. For years, BPA was also used in making baby bottles, until a USFDA report in 2010 identified the possible health hazards of BPA exposure. This resulted in the FDA outlawing the usage of BPA in all baby and children’s useables, including sippy cups and baby bottles.

Although USFDA does not permit the presence of BPA in infant formula packaging and other children’s useables, the ban does not extend to other products, such as canned food and beverage cans. So, children and juveniles are still at a risk of potential BPA exposure most of the time. In fact, blood samples of quite a few children show high BPA levels

Correlation Between High BPA levels and Childhood Obesity

There appears to be a correlation between the amount of BPA accumulated in the body and childhood obesity. A new study reported in the recent edition of the medical journal Pediatrics links higher BPA exposure to an increased risk of obese tendencies in children. The study was conducted by scientists of the University of Michigan who examined urine samples to measure BPA concentration in children within the age group of 6-18. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference of the participants were also recorded and taken into consideration. The scientists took this information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that was conducted from 2003 to 2010.After investigating the data of around 3,370 children in great detail, the researchers noted that the likelihood of children becoming obese increases with higher urinary BPA levels in the body. The study also noticed that children with high BPA levels tend to have an abnormally high waist-to-height ratio as well as an alarmingly high body mass index, both pointing towards excess body fat.

Previous studies have confirmed a correlation between soaring urinary BPA levels and increased chances of getting cardiovascular problems and diabetes in adults. However, in the University of Michigan study involving children, no such link was observed. To be precise, this study did not detect any association between elevated BPA levels and abnormally high cholesterol or insulin levels that are considered to be biomarkers of chronic ailments.

Childhood Obesity Statistics

Read about childhood obesity statistics in this Buzzle write up, and get to know how acute this problem has become in the US. Understanding the gravity of the issue can help us to become more sensitive regarding obesity as a medical condition.

According to the World Health Organization, most of the world’s population lives in countries where obesity, rather than malnourishment (as a factor), causes death.
The threat of obesity has become a major health concern for adults and children alike, and has heightened in the past few decades in the US. It has become a striking reality in the US society, and has only worsened over the last 30 years. Childhood obesity statistics are alarming, and they have compelled the Federal government and health agencies to focus on health reforms and create an awareness about this grave medical condition. Before plunging into childhood obesity data collected from various sources, knowing the cause of childhood obesity is important to treat this disease.

Statistics related to obesity in children have established a close relation between unhealthy eating habits and the increase in extra body fat. In fact, poor eating habits are cited to be one of the major causes of childhood obesity. With fast foods as an integral and unavoidable part of dietary habits, it’s not surprising to observe a significant rise in the number of children suffering from issues related to their weight. Who should be blamed for the health crisis assuming an endemic proportion in kids all across the US? First and foremost, it is sad to note that some parents are careless, or rather they have no time for their kids to provide them cooked meals and educate them on healthy eating.

As a result, in such families, directly or indirectly, unhealthy eating habits are encouraged. If the elders and parents are not encouraging kids to eat homemade cooked meals, it’s least expected that children will develop healthy eating habits. Certainly, causes and effects of childhood obesity need to be understood with the help of an expert nutritionist, and fostering the habit of eating healthy foods should be developed in kids. While unhealthy eating leads as the major cause of obesity, there are several social, behavioral, and genetic causes of obesity, which must be kept in mind for understanding the nuisances of obesity from a larger perspective.

As per the reports published on the official website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on September 2014, approximately 17% (or 12.7 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese. Obesity in children has become a challenging issue for doctors and parents across the US. To understand the current situation closely, consider this statistics published by the CDC to show the gravity of this problem- The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.

Men’s Health Rectal Bleeding

Rectal bleeding involves the presence of blood in the stools due to bleeding occurring in the rectum, which is the part of the gastrointestinal tract that occurs just prior to the anus. Know more about its causes and treatment, through this article.

Medically termed as hematochezia, rectal bleeding refers to the discharge of bright red blood from the anus, often combined with stools and/or blood clots. It usually develops quickly, and is commonly related to abdominal disorders. Although the blood discharge is usually from the rectum, in some cases, it can occur from other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The bleeding is commonly observed in the form of black and tarry stools, maroon stools, bright red blood on or in the stool, blood on the toilet tissue, or pink staining of the toilet water. Mild or severe rectal bleeding in men can rapidly deplete a patient’s body of blood, hence resulting in symptoms like weakness, dizziness, nausea, fainting, low blood pressure, or orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when going from the sitting or lying position to the standing position). It can be a mild or life-threatening matter, hence, needs immediate care and medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Anal Fissure: In this condition, the lining of the anal canal gets torn due to constipation or forceful bowel movements, which not only cause blood discharge but also severe pain while passing the stools.

Angiodysplasia: It is a vascular malformation in the gut, that causes gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding due to increased dilation of the blood vessels. It may cause anemia, if the bleeding is substantial. It occurs due to aging and degeneration of blood vessels.

Gastroenteritis: Also known as infectious diarrhea, it involves the infection of the GI tract by viruses like rotavirus, bacteria like Escherichia coli and Campylobacter , or other parasitic and non-parasitic microbial organisms. It causes diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. In case of sever infection, it also causes internal bleeding, which results in bloody stools.

Hemorrhoids (Piles): They are basically masses or clumps of tissues that enlarge due to chronic constipation or straining of the anus while passing hard or dry stools. This causes bleeding or anal discomfort. However, bleeding from hemorrhoids is usually moderate, and does not lead to anemia or low blood pressure.

Fistula: It is an unusual, burrowing channel that extends from the rectum to the skin around the anus. It usually drains a whitish discharge, but sometimes can also bleed. Fistula is normally related with the chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract, causing pain and bleeding while passing feces.

Symptoms and treatment of kidney stones in men.

One of the most painful, and unfortunately the most common disorders affecting men, is the presence of kidney stones. Although they do affect women as well, men are more vulnerable to kidney stones than women. For all those men who only partially know about it, and for those completely unaware of this painful condition, here is a rundown on what the condition is, what are the causes of kidney stones, and what are the symptoms and treatment measures for the same.

What are Kidney Stones?
Formed within the kidney or the urinary tract, kidney stones are hard, crystalline mineral deposits in the form of small stone like structures. This condition is also known as nephronlithiasis (nephron = related to kidney, lithos = stone). It is one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract, affecting nearly 10% of Americans at some point in their lives. While typically all adults over the age of 30 are at risk, men tend to be affected more frequently than women; especially men in their 40s. To understand how these stones are formed in our body, we have to understand the basic working of the urinary tract.

Formation of Kidney Stones
The kidneys are bean-shaped organs located below the ribs. The main function of these organs is to remove extra water and wastes from the blood, producing urine. Kidneys also help keep a stable balance of salts and other solutes in the blood. While most of the stones are passed out of the body in the urine stream, the stones which are sufficiently larger in size can cause obstruction to the ureter thus causing extreme pain. Stones or crystals are the result of certain chemicals in the kidneys, forming crystals and bonding together. Although there are many chemical compounds that can form stones in the urinary tract, the most common type of kidney stones in men contains calcium with oxalate or phosphate and uric acid.

Causes of Kidney Stones in Men

There are many causes of kidney stones; most common among these is a urinary tract infection. Certain medication is also known to cause renal stones in men. Some aspects of a person’s lifestyle habits, such as drinking less water, lack of physical activity (exercise) over long periods, and consuming excess of calcium oxalate (found in milk, tea and chocolate) can all contribute to this renal problem. Finally, genetics also predispose certain individuals to kidney stones, especially if there is a family history.

Symptoms of Hot Flashes in Men

Hot flashes in men are directly related to the hormonal changes taking place in the body. With right treatment and home care measures you can reduce the discomfort.

Hot flashes or sweats are most common menopause symptoms, and so are mostly associated with women. However, there are many men who suffer from hot flashes and don’t consider any treatment for this condition. But, men experiencing these flashes should seek medical help, as they could be sign pointing a serious health disorder.

Andropause: Andropause is male menopause which occurs during the aging process in men, and hot flashes are the common symptoms of this condition. Other symptoms accompanied by the flashes in this process include weight gain, trouble at sleeping and slow hair growth.
Infections: Certain infections like HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis can also cause night sweats.
Tumor/Cancer: If you are experiencing hot flashes along with testicular pain, immediately contact a doctor as this could be a sign of cancer. Males can also experience these flashes due to a tumor present in pituitary gland or hypothalamus.
Hormone Level: Sudden hot flashes may also occur as a hormone imbalance symptom, like when there is a sudden and substantial lowering in the level of the testosterone, which is the sex hormone or the androgen hormone.
Reaction to Food/Medicine: Reaction to MSG, that is, mono sodium glutamate can also cause them. This is a food additive, and one needs to check their diet for MSG. A person can also experience hot flashes as an allergy to certain medications, like nifedipine, niacin, calcitonin, etc.
The symptoms can be mild to severe. The mild signs are less discomforting than the severe ones.
The signs typically start with the face and spread to the neck and chest area, lasting for seconds to minutes
The hot flash can start with a feeling of warmth spreading in the upper body, with skin redness and mild perspiration to excessive sweating
Finally the person will get a cold, clammy and uncomfortable feeling, if the hot flashes are occurring during night they can interfere with sleeping
Other uncomfortable sensations like dizziness, weakness, heart palpitations and pressure feeling can also be experienced along with the hot flashes

It is important to get yourself diagnosed, to know the exact cause behind the occurrence of the flashes. The doctor will suggest a blood test to check the deficiency of testosterone, which most probably will be giving you the hot flashes. After the underlying cause has been identified, a person can get rid of them with the appropriate treatment. The treatment involves mostly changing the medications or testosterone therapy.

Traditional vs. Alternative Medicine

Traditional medicine, as we commonly know, includes modern health science, medical technology, surgery, and associated practices. It can also be referred to as contemporary medicine or the western medicine. Alternative medicine is the collection of all the knowledge, skills, and practices based on age-old theories or experiences. It comprises a wide range of procedures native to different cultures around the world. This science is a combination of all the unconventional practices that are used to prevent, diagnose, improve, and treat any form of illness. While experts differ in their view on this subject, it is important to deduce the pros and cons of both the branches of medicine. A judicious mix of both can be a good way forward.
Different Aspects of Both Sciences
☛ Traditional approach focuses on the cause of the ailment. It concentrates on factors causing the disease, its prevention, remedies, and deals with the abnormality as an independent entity. The person affected, the environment, or the circumstances under which the disease occurred is insignificant in this system. It is limited to the scientific study of an anomaly and ways to remove it.
✔ The alternative approach is an ancient concept and varies according to person and place. It has evolved in different regions of the world over a long period of time. Traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, or homeopathy are some of the practices that come under this category.
☛ The underlying principle of these systems is the same, i.e., considering the ailment as a dynamic entity of the system and ways to uproot its foundation. It considers a disease as an upset of balance between a body and its surroundings. Therefore, it focuses on cleansing the entire system rather than eliminating the immediate cause of concern.

cupping therapy
✔ Traditional medicine, as we commonly know, does not consider other processes while treating a disease. It is entirely concerned with the organ affected and its treatment. This approach may adversely affect the other parts during the course of healing.
☛ Alternative practices consider a disease as a deviation from the normal functions of the entire system that is affected. Hence, it focuses on the background, environmental, and social conditions and of course, the part affected. The healer’s job, in this case, is to remove the disharmony prevailing and not the elimination of the actual ailment. The healing of a system amounts to the alleviation of the particular disease.
✔ However, both the systems have certain advantages over each other. For example, in case of an emergency, such as a severe accident or where an urgent surgical procedure is required, conventional systems prove to be far more superior.

What is Iridology ?

It’s funny how the eyes can tell so much about you; all it takes is just one look and stories will unfold. From sickness to health, your eyes can predict just about anything regarding you. The most interesting fact is that even after your death, it can reveal the cause of your death. The best part is that your eyes simply cannot lie; it is no wonder then, that doctors first check your eyes when you visit them.
The iris is the thin circular structure located in your eye which controls the amount of light entering your eye. Considered to be the most visible part of the eye, the iris works as a map of your body. The iris is framed with dense lines radiating from the pupil to the outer rim, called markings. These markings are related to certain parts of your body, which when observed closely can reveal the overall health of the individual.
What is Iridology
According to a theory, the iris is a display area of all the nerve fibers terminating in the brain. Hence, the iris is able to sashay any sort of change that takes place in the body, and this is detectable due to the discoloration of the iris. When the iris is examined by a practitioner, the discoloration throws light on the condition of the individual, which then allows for proper medication. Studying the iris to detect ailments is what iridology is all about.

Iridology, broadly defined, is the study of the iris for diagnostic purposes. It is considered to be a pseudoscience, owing to its non-conventional means of healing. Iridology, in other words, is the science of determining the state of the body or the overall well-being of the individual, on the basis of the observations of the iris of the eye. The observations are matched with an iris chart, which then allows for detailed diagnosis of the individual’s health.

Iridologists claim that the iris is capable of not only throwing light on the present health, but also reveals the problems of the past while giving a glimpse to the future health of the individual.
Iridology: Observations
Iridology does not determine the cause of the problem; in fact, what it does is simply plots the area where the problem has occurred. The unique patterns of the iris and the delicate fibers forming the iris are studied and compared to that of the iris chart. In a healthy iris, the lines are dense and straight, whereas the lines resembling a close grain (like that of a wood board) shows signs of temporary sickness. The iris of individuals who aren’t in the ‘pink of health’ are distorted and generally resemble lesions or knots, which again corresponds to the particular organ in the body.
